Also my reading indicates that collisions in the wild with md5 are considered to be essentially impossible, that it takes a lot of effort to even intentionally cause a collision. md5 is used for uniquely identifying files and device states almost exclusively. Any open source ISO I've downloaded supplies both md5 and sha1 to verify the veracity of the data in the downloaded ISO. I'm pretty sure Disk Utility uses md5 for checksumming read-only DMG files - with options for other schemes for encrypting them.
