64-bit Linux on Mac with 32-bit EFI firmware?

Hi,

I hope this question isn't too inappopriate for this mailing list (its a
hard question to get answered so I'm posting to a few lists to see if anyone
out there might know or have experience in this nuanced space).

I have a Late 2006 Intel Xserve which has Apple's 32-bit EFI firmware. Its a
2 x 2 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon). The CPUs are 64-bit capable (as is evidence
when Mac OS X Server boots this Xserve and its capable of using 64-bit kexts
-- not to mention some OS X native programs that are 64-bit capable are
capable of running 64-bit as reflected in Activity Monitor where the Kind
shows up for some processes as "Intel (64 bit))"). I need to boot my Xserve
natively (bare metal, no virtual machines) into a 64-bit Linux distro such
as but not limited to Ubuntu. I know its possible to boot and run 32-bit
Ubuntu Linux on this Xserve as I have done this historically. For the life
of me, I can't believe that there's not some sort of workaround so that I
can boot 64-bit Linux despite the 32-bit EFI. Has anyone ever tried doing
this?
