And some familiarity with grub2 and the boot sequence since I think your 2006 XServe is EFI booting only, and does not have a CSM. The 32-bit version of Grub2 will boot an x86_64 version of the Linux kernel. Here's another resource with a rough step by step but some of these steps I find unnecessary.
