It isn't a bug, it's a feature.

Let me have a (wild) guess: With "crystal sharp" you're talking about  
no anti-aliasing at all (Windows 95 style). Mac OS X' display engine  
sees this and does it's best to improve the appearance. If you'd use  
an anti-aliased font from the beginning, the display wouldn't try to  
improve.

As said, only a guess.
