It's not uncommon to see MacOS systems that are constantly reindexing, to no avail. It eats up CPU and slows down the machine. The first resort is to add the hard drive to the Spotlight Privacy list (ignore the nag) for a minute or so, then take it out. This destroys the existing index, which is presumably corrupted, and rebuilds it from zero. That normally works; if it doesn't, the second resort is to manually rip out the two or three index files and semaphores from the root of the drive in question, and then re-perform the first resort.
