unable to partition external SSD

Hi, I just bought a 500-GB external SSD (Samsung T5). It was originally in EX-FAT format, but I used Disk Utility to reformat as MacOS. I would like to partition this SSD, but the partition button in Disk Utility is gray. The other buttons (First Aid, Erase, Restore, Unmount) are all available, but not the Partition button. How can I create multiple partitions on this SSD? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
