For Mojave there are a number of reports of failures to connect to iCal
servers due to
SSL problems.   You didn't mention if your clients will use Mojave. If so,
you may
need to obtain and manage SSL certificates and cyphers -- not a
trivial matter.
You might  consider installing a linux server in a VM  so you can take
advantage of distro
packages and the well-trodden path of linux server configuration and
management.
