Not actually "avoided."  Most companies make their drivers for SOHO printers to work in vanilla mode, so it's not needed; and if you try to use it anyway, the driver has no idea what you're doing because you're not doing it in the way IT wanted to do it.  (HP printer software, in particular, is notorious for "my way or the highway.")  

The IP Printer setup is mainly available as a fallback for strange printers that don't work any easier way.  In your case, we've established that the IP Printer option doesn't work for you anyway, but we have to assume there is SOME option that works.
