Mesh adaptivity in thickness direction

Hi all,
          I am performing a shot peeing simulation in Abaqus using volume elements. I need to have a very fine mesh near the contact. My question is : is it possible to define a mesh adaptivity in thickness direction for volume elements, such that i have a really fine resolution near the surface? I donot want to use a static mesh with fine resolution near the surface.
