Continuum shells are most commonly used in two situations: (1) when only a solid CAD geometry is available and the extraction of a midplane would be difficult, and (2) when solid and shell regions share an interface (since continuum shells have the same topology and degrees-of-freedom and eight-node continuum elements, they can be tied together without the need for MPCs).
