my axiom is broken

Hello,

I get an error message when I try to start axiom.

Re-reading compress.daase   Re-reading interp.daase
   Re-reading operation.daase
   Re-reading category.daase 
   >> System error:
   Couldn't protect


Error: The tag |top_level| is undefined.
Fast links are on: do (si::use-fast-links nil) for debugging
Error signalled by RETURN.
Broken at APPLY.  Type :H for Help.

I tried reinstalling the package (Ubuntu 9.04 64), but it didn't help. I don't know what else to try. Can anyone please help?
