Ah, thank you.  I got a clean copy of the source code, and compiled
without make failing in midstream, then the problem went away.

The reason make failed in midstream the first time might be of
interest: the configure script, as shipped, can't recognise when it's
running on Fedora 8, so Makefile.pamphlet tries to use the
non-existent static version of libXpm.
