Dear Colleagues,

A bunch of us, at the instigation of Bruce Hendrickson, John
Gilbert, and yours truly, have decided to organize a subcommunity of
researchers who are interested in combinatorial aspects of scientific
computing... This group would certainly include the sparse direct methods
community, but even more. Combinatorial problems in nonlinear
problems and PDE modeling, and more generally in all areas of
scientific computing, in addition to sparse linar algebra,
would  be fair game too.
We plan to organize special sessions at conferences
(the next one planned is at SIAM Computational Science 2003,
organized by Ali Pinar, Bruce Hendrickson, and John Gilbert;
and another at ICIAM organized by Suely Oliveira and me),
workshops, and special issues of journals for articles, etc.

Asa first step, many felt that a listserv as an email discussion forum
for topics of interest to this group would be good.
Here would be a place an announcement of your recent paper,
a PhD student who is graduating and looking for a position,
a research question or solution, experiences with or questions about
software, news of a conference, etc.

I invite you to join us at http://list.odu.edu/listinfo/csc
(csc = Combinatorial Scientific Computing)
subscribe to the list, and begin to participate...
The instructions for joining are on that web page;
or if you send me email, I will subscribe you.
Currently we have 30 subscribed members.
Please forward this message to your friends who should
be informed of this. And share your ideas on how to
make our community thrive...

When you subscribe, you will get a welcome message to which
you need to respond to confirm your subscription.
You can also unsubscribe at the same web page, although why
you would wish to do that, I cannot imagine :-)

If you have any problems with the listserv, please send me email.
Thanks.
