Professor Fredrik Manne wishes to let the members of the CSC list serv
know that Assefaw Hadish Gebremedhin defended his Ph.D. thesis,
"Practical Parallel Algorithms for Graph Coloring Problems in Numerical
Optimization", at the Department of Informatics,
University of Bergen, Norway, on March 25, 2003.
Dr. Gebremedhin is Frederik's first PhD student!

Members of the thesis examining committee included
Dr. Paul Hovland (Argonne National Lab), Prof. Rob Bisseling (Utrecht),
and Prof. Pinar Heggernes (Bergen).
Afterwards Assefaw hosted the examiners,
faculty advisors, and family at a lovely dinner
at the Boha restaurant in Bergen.

The thesis consists of the following 5 papers:

Scalable Parallel Graph Coloring Algorithms
with F. Manne.

Graph Coloring in Optimization Revisited
with F. Manne and A. Pothen

Parallel Distance-k Coloring Algorithms for Numerical Optimization
with F. Manne and A. Pothen

Graph Coloring on a Coarse Grained Multiprocessor
with I.G. Lassaous, J. Gustedt and J.A. Telle

PRO: a Model for Parallel Resource-Optimal Computation
with I. Guerin, J. Gustedt and J.A. Telle

The thesis is available at

Congratulations, Assefaw and Fredrik!
