Dear Friends,

We are excited to let you know that SIAM has approved this new Activity Gr=
oup on Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms (ACDA) to foster resea=
rch on the design, theoretical analysis, computational evaluation and depl=
oyment of algorithms for combinatorial problems formulated from applicatio=
ns. Example areas include combinatorial scientific computing, algorithmic=
s, algorithm engineering, algorithmic differentiation, combinatorial optim=
ization, emerging applications (security, machine learning, quantum computi=
ng, bioinformatics), etc.

A biennial SIAM Conference will be organized by the SIAG, and the first me=
eting is tentatively scheduled for 2021. The next SIAM Workshop on CSC is =
planned for Feb./March 2020, co-located with the SIAM Conference on Paralle=
l Processing. After that workshop, the intent is to fold the CSC workshop i=
nto the new SIAM Conference on ACDA.

A web page for the SIAG is available at https://www.siam.org/membership/Act=
ivity-Groups/detail/applied-and-computational-discrete-algorithms
The Feb 2019 issue of SIAM Unwrapped mentions the SIAG: https://sinews.siam=
.org/Details-Page/siam-unwrapped-february-2019
A list serve for the SIAG will also be created by SIAM, and it will be mode=
rated initially by Bora Ucar (Lyons) and Cindy Phillips (Sandia). Activiti=
es that are planned before the first conference will be announced on the li=
st serve, and you would have the opportunity to post messages of interest t=
o the community as well.

The officers for the SIAG, for an initial two year term, are Alex Pothen (=
Purdue, [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>)l; Blair Sullivan (NC=
 State, [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>); John Gilb=
ert (UCSB, [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>); and Cindy Phil=
lips (Sandia, [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>).

We welcome the participation of all interested researchers in the SIAG. Ple=
ase consider this a personal invitation from us, and join by going to the=
 URL https://my-helper.siam.org/forms/join_siag.htm
Membership fee for a SIAG is $15 per year, and students receive two SIAG me=
mberships free. Please join and also encourage your colleagues and students=
 to join.
If you are not a member of SIAM, you would have to do that first, and there=
is a link from the page listed above to do that as well.

We welcome your thoughts on growing our community in the months ahead.
Looking forward to seeing many of your at the SIAM Conference on Computatio=
nal Science and Engineering in Spokane WA in two weeks as well.
Best wishes.

Alex, Blair, John and Cindy
