Had to make a few other minor tweaks, but maxima still builds with gcl. I don't see anything bad happening and the testsuite still passes (gcl Version_2_7_2pre15). There may have been a increase in testsuite time from 82 sec to 90, but not clear; Other things may be been running at the time and we know the times do vary a bit between runs. Overall, I think this is a good change. (Oh, I left the optimize thing in.
