building pistachio when the build host has grub2 (aka grub-pc) instead of grub

Hello,
I'm trying to build pistachio on a ubuntu 11.10 system, where grub has been dropped in favor of grub2.
However, the documented process of building an fd image of pistachio assumes that grub is available and can be copied to
the fd image.
As I am no expert in pc and linux booting details, I have no idea what I should do now. Does anyone else have experience
with such a setup?
