Hi. It's kinda sad to see this thread go back and forth all the time. I used to think I could make a living because I know linux, and know it well. After a couple years, my mind has changed to believe that linux is more of a spare time thing since it hasn't been generating an awful lot of money for me. It's a clear and simple truth. I am not making money. My company made a net loss last year. Seeing this plain truth, I decided to go do something completely different. I decided to go find a day job, one which pays well enough to base a continuation of said company off, since I still believe to have the skills, just not the investments I'd need. I'm supposedly one of those sensitive computer nerd types, with completely undiplomatic points of view on pretty much everything. So I looked around, stumbled across a job which pays around $1100-1200 a month in net wages. It has nothing to do with computers at all. It's in welding, something which I've never done before, but seems to be going alright. This is not what I set out to do. This is not what I dreamed about when I was just a little kid. It's hard work, it makes me all dirty and sweaty, and I can't bring pizza to eat on the job. It is likely going to be something that takes a lot of my spare time, since I'm still learning, and I need to continue learning to get better at it, if I am to generate a real revenue that can make things possible. I won't have much energy left to build my business while I do this, and it will slumber and hardly generate any new customers, if at all. I may well lose existing ones, such as there are, because I don't have time for them. Is this giving up, though? No. I'm still getting ahead, and I will still get shiny new toys. This merely enables me to pay for things like bandwidth, stock for resale and more things like that. I can definitely envision sticking with this job, while hiring someone else to do easy stuff for my company, for which I won't have time. I won't have time, or energy, to code a thing. Sad but true. I find it offensive to see someone waiting for money to come his way, when I look at all the effort I'm expending, without begging for other people to please support my living. I don't expect people to suddenly start carrying money to me. In fact, I'd wonder if they were trying to launder money if they did, or if they're Nigerians. I'm quite with mister Miller on this one. Go get a job. Tom Lord wrote: > Working on it. Here and elsewhere. Making at least incremental > progress, thank you very much. In all the time I've looked for a job, I never made incremental progress. I got a job or I didn't. That's all the increments there are, unless you're talking part-time work? Also, a word of advice, people who give you the idea you're 'working towards paid employment' without you ever seeing a contract or getting a single dime, they are very likely lying. No matter how friendly they are. rgds, Peter de Freitas
