I had some success with the Codatex readers for a door entry system I
put together for my mum about 5yrs ago (coupled to a Videx phone entry
system).  The 125kHz cards, fobs etc are as cheap as chips on ebay,
often called EM4100, 410x etc

Some vendors customise their readers to only work with their own
custom-programmed cards/fobs, even though they use the same technology
it locks you into their overpriced fobs, so check first whatever you go
for is generic. Also note that some fobs can be fragile if dropped, so
buy them in 10's! Hopefully the cat's sense of self-preservation will
prevent them being whacked too hard!
