May be that Sonos has a slightly more luxury target market than typical 
MH systems ?

To control an AVR, I wrote some MH code to talk to an IR transmitter on 
a pi (a secondary LIRC instance on a Libreelec/Kodi player). This 
controls my Denon AVR that unfortunately just predates their serial 
remote control protocol, but this solution is pretty full-featured and 
reliable, albeit 1-way of course. LIRC + this solution would work on a 
picoreplayer too.

LIRC has a nice simple IP interface on port 8765 which is rarely 
mentioned, but you can talk to it directly form a 'socket item' in MH 
over a network, and presumably local loopback if you need to. I 
converted the Denon raw codes from www.remotecentral.com for LIRC using 
pronto2lirc (part of LIRC), and was amazed when they all worked first 
time.   For extra entertainment, the pi 3 runs Kodi, powered from the 
TV, and the home-made IR blaster uses some spare audio cores in a SCART 
cable (remember that ?) that happens to be buried in the wall. A SCART 
video core sends the SPDIF audio converted to "coax" from TV optical to 
AVR.  And so a humble SCART cable staggered into the digital age...

I can share code if anyone is interested.

Also extensively updated xpl_squeezebox.pm to control and monitor half a 
dozen squeezeboxes of various flavours, incl. a picoreplayer.  
Controlling a Sony TV over IP is a whole other story...
