I agree, there are some people who would contribute if they could write in some newer language, and I see no issue with starting something new. However, I also think the userbase would be far larger/happier if it were possible to connect the two apps so it wasn't necessary to choose between new-but-feature-poor and legacy-and-feature rich. There are enough ways to get things in and out of MH that it shouldn't be a big feat to make them play nice together.
