I only have one Pi on a SSD, since I need that one to be faster and more robust than typical, but it is running a Crucial BX500 120 GB. That particular one is a low end SSD, but I would expect all desktop grade SSDs to be better than even the high-end SD cards. SSDs are also much faster, have better wear leveling, and are designed for longer life and more reliability. Sure, it is a more expensive then an SD card when you add on the external enclosure and all, but still likely less than the price of two SD cards if you had to replace the SD card every few years.
