Almost any information available at the time of an interaction between a system and a user can be seen as contextual information. Some examples are obtained through sensors: spatial information (e.g. location, orientation), temporal information (e.g. time of the day, date), who you are with, and people that are nearby, resources that are nearby (e.g. accessible devices, and hosts), etc. </DIV> <DIV class=RTE></DIV> <DIV class=RTE></DIV> <DIV class=RTE>Such information is used to design adaptive systems and to provide custom services to users based on their profile and preferences. Pervasive environments are the prime field for context-aware computing where many applications have emerged in the last decade. </DIV> <DIV class=RTE></DIV> <DIV class=RTE>There is another community more interested in developing context-based formalism for representing knowledge and reasoning. For example, it is possible along these approaches to represent practices, which are contextualized versions of the procedures established by the enterprise. If the first approach is more known as tangible computing, the second one is more concerned by social computing. </DIV> <DIV class=RTE></DIV> <DIV class=RTE></DIV> <DIV class=RTE>While early models mainly addressed the modeling of context with respect to one application domain and vary in the context they represent, no uniform context model is actually achieved. This is of main interest since many applications can benefit from it. </DIV> <DIV class=RTE></DIV> <DIV class=RTE>By organizing this workshop, we aim at addressing the problem of coupling both approaches from a software engineering perspective. We look for original submissions on the following topics (but not limited to): </DIV> <DIV class=RTE></DIV> <DIV class=RTE></DIV> <DIV class=RTE> <UL> <LI>Software aspects of Context acquisition tools and techniques </LI></UL></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <UL> <LI>Object-oriented techniques applied to user modeling and context modeling </LI></UL> <DIV></DIV> <UL> <LI>Software frameworks for Context-aware applications </LI></UL> <DIV></DIV> <UL> <LI>Design patterns applied to context-aware applications </LI></UL> <DIV></DIV> <UL> <LI>Context in pervasive/multi-agents systems </LI></UL> <DIV></DIV> <UL> <LI>Context in security issues </LI></UL> <DIV></DIV>The main questions that we would like to debate in this one-day workshop are around: How to model context in an efficient way using object-oriented techniques in order to improve software usability? And how to change our viewpoint on context-based applications? <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV></DIV> <P> </P> <P><STRONG>Submission of papers</STRONG> </P> <DIV></DIV>IWSAC04 invites authors to submit original and unpublished work. Length of papers should not exceed 8 pages in IEEE double-column format. Paper submission should be electronic. Papers exceeding the specified length or could not be viewed with Adobe Acrobat may not be reviewed.
