This workshop will focus on the application of knowledge capturing=20
and semantic web technologies and standards for the needs of=20
e-learning systems. It will also discuss issues related to their use for=20
content and knowledge components specification, effective courseware=20
construction and modeling the learner.

SWEL'05 is the third in a series (http://www.win.tue.nl/SW-EL/)
following the successful SW-EL'04, held in three sessions in=20
conjunction with three different conferences (AH 2004, The Netherland,
ITS 2004, Brazil, and ISWC 2004, Japan) and the Workshop on Concepts=20
and Ontologies in Web-based Educational Systems, held in conjunction=20
with ICCE'2002 in Auckland, New Zealand.

Workshop goals

The SW-EL'05 workshop will:

- focus on the knowledge acquisition and application of Semantic Web=20
technologies for the needs of educational Web-based systems.=20

- discuss issues related to the use of knowledge capturing and=20
Semantic Web technologies for content and knowledge components=20
specification, effective courseware constructing and modelling=20
the learner.=20

- discuss the current state-of-the-art in using Semantic Web=20
technologies and standards in e-learning applications.

Workshop topics

Topics of interest include:

* Knowledge acquisition and management in e-learning environments

* Using ontologies and/or Semantic Web technologies within=20
     e-learning applications:
  ** to achieve interoperability between educational applications;=20
  ** to enable sharable knowledge components and user models;
  ** to support authoring of Web-based Educational Systems;
  ** to achieve better personalization and adaptation in Web-based=20
     Educational Systems;
  ** to support modularised and standardized architectures.=20

* Knowledge-based annotation of learning objects
  ** Exploring possible combinations of existing Semantic Web and/or=20
     educational standards and mappings between them;
  ** Methods and tools for annotation and reusability of learning=20
     objects;
  ** Role of RDF, OWL or XTM as a basis for educational metadata=20
     specification languages.=20

* Semantic Web-based Educational Systems architectures.

* Real-world systems, case studies and empirical research for Web-
     based Educational Systems:
  ** lessons learnt;
  ** best practices;
  ** case studies for improved learners, instructors and authors'=20
     experience.

All of the topics can be approached from different perspectives:=20
theoretical, systems engineering, application, case study and system=20
evaluation, and so on.

Workshop Format
*******************************************************************
This will be a full-day workshop, including 20 minute position paper=20
presentations and a panel discussion on selected topics drawn from the=20
paper presentations.=20

Submission
*******************************************************************
The participants can submit position papers up to 10 pages long. The=20
accepted papers will be published online on the workshop website and=20
in workshop proceedings.

Submit your full papers in electronic form in (*.doc), (*.rtf) or=20
(*.pdf) to the workshop co-chairs at [email protected] and=20
[email protected].=20

Include SW-EL@K-CAP'05 and first author's name in the subject line.
Name the submission file also with the first author's family name.

Workshop proceedings
*******************************************************************
The papers from all the sessions of the SW-EL'05 workshop will be=20
printed in one-volume proceedings. Partial proceedings containing=20
only the papers of the K-CAP'05 SW-EL session will be also provided.=20
After the workshop, the proceedings will be made available online.=20
Possibilities will be investigated to publish the best workshop=20
papers in a special issue of a refereed journal.=20
