Topic :> Dynamics Of Ontologies 11

Visible Inquiry (cont.)

At any time, the model that we have formed up to that time
can be compared with the current log of descriptive data
about the original phenomenon. In the terminology that
comes along with Peirce's model of inquiry this stage
is given the name of "induction", more specifically,
inductive evaluation, probation, or testing. Thus,
for Peirce, the inductive phase is more corrective
than generative, and accordingly more 'post hoc'
than 'ante hoc' with respect to its canonical
station in the cyclic ordering of inquiry.
It often happens that new possibilities
of experience and experiment will arise
from reflective review of this juncture.
Figure 2.4 shows the place of induction.
