Topic :> Dynamics Of Ontologies 13
o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o
Example 1. Prognostic Signs And Symptoms
My objectives in this Example are:
1. To illustrate the steps of the inquiry process in a concrete case,
where an investigator moves through various states of information
reflected in logical theories.
2. To show how a software utility for maintaining deductive relationships
among the various states of information reflected in logical theories
can be useful in all phases of inquiry, whether deductive or otherwise.
3. To point out one type of clarification step that often comes up in practice,
especially in the task of acquiring implicit knowledge from experts, namely,
the detection and filling in of previously unexpressed background knowledge.
In order to follow the temporal evolution of information as it occurs
in this Example, it will be necessary to alter the generic Figure for
the dynamics of inquiry only slightly, as presented below in Figure 3.
