foreground hack...

How does "that" foreground hack work???

R --slave <fifo >out

I'd like to run an R process that uses a socket
for stdin, but it exits on each command I send to
the fifo. (this is going to be localhost session
management) I'm guessing if I can make it think it's
running interactively (the foreground hack), possibly
make it think the fifo is a tty, it will accept
multiple commands from the fifo.
