Yes, this is probably the better approach.
However, the problem with socklog-conf is that it currently sets up a
non-functional socklog-klog configuration on Linux 2.6 systems and even
the documentation does not mention this. 

I feel you should probably either update the docs or socklog-conf, i.e.

- socklog-conf works as expected on 2.6
OR
- the socklog documentation clearly states how to set up socklog-klog on
  2.6
