Why can't you access the preference menu? Does workrave crash when opening the 
preferences (as described in: http://issues.workrave.org/show_bug.cgi?id=981); 
or can you access the preferences because both the system tray icon and the 
main window is disabled (this can happen in 1.9.3...)?

Could you please check if the following snapshot
