Like Kees-Jan, I'm very enthusiastic about your solution. Not sure why I did 
not accept this patch 2 years ago. I did a quick search in my mailbox; 
couldn't find the patch (I may have removed some attachments...). But writing 
this feature from scratch is probably not that much work anyways :-)
