And as history would have it, around the time Samba was becoming popular I happened to work on a competing product and had to reverse engineer the SMB protocol. (Technically the big picture stuff is documented - the actual implementation differs between Windows versions and the little details aren't documented. I rewrote the code that lists a directory 4 times!)
