Many of the comments after the article claim it is reverse engineering
and that is the appropriate term.

And as history would have it, around the time Samba was becoming popular
I happened to work on a competing product and had to reverse engineer
the SMB protocol.  (Technically the big picture stuff is documented -
the actual implementation differs between Windows versions and the
little details aren't documented.  I rewrote the code that lists a
directory 4 times!)
