Did you read the comment directly above the commented out strorunicode?

Since common doesn't use wx, it doesn't know if we are running in unicode
mode or not.  guihelper does know so it updates common to have the
appropriate definition.

Neither.  You need to work out how strorunicode is not ending up in
common's namespace like it should.
