It looks like it is worthwhile changing over from running the
ffmpeg binary and instead using the pymedia extension (which
wraps the ffmpeg libraries).  It looks like it can also play
now, including video.  (I did look at this about a year ago
but it wasn't very mature then).  Here is an example of doing
audio format conversion like we do.

If anyone does decide to do this, please document how to compile
it and especially which modules to include so that the builds
can be the same on all platforms.
