In the case of Windows, there is no console so that is a no brainer.
Both Mac and Linux have consoles and it is normal behaviour to output
usage information to the console even for gui apps.  What you can do for
Mac and Linux is spew usage to the console and then try to do it to the
gui.  Unlike Windows, the gui can fail to work for many reasons under
Mac and Linux.
