How do I work with the com_ and packet description files?

I just don't seem to find any information about this.  At least not in 
the form of a how-to document.

I have a LG VX5300, which is already supported...  But I found that the 
SMS Saved messages don't parse correctly.  And the notepad/memo isn't 
supported.  I would like to fix these issues, but I don't want to setup 
a full development install.

I use Python, so that's already installed.  I was seeking information 
about editing the packet file and com_.py file, how to compile them, and 
slip them into my binary BitPim install to test my changes.
