error sending new PhoneBook contacts to Motorola V3m (Sprint)

BitPim 1.07 can read my "V3m (Sprint)"'s PhoneBook, but when I try to
send PhoneBook data, it reports an exception attempting to create a
new contact in Frame sendatcommand in commport.pyo at line 278 and the
Protocol Log has an ERROR reading data back.
Lots of details and a few lesser glitches I found follow.
Much thanks in advance for any suggestions and I'm happy to provide
more information and do more troubleshooting.

I'm back again as a BitPim user! (No Sanyo USB drivers for Vista
and/or newer Katana phones forced me to abandon it.)
== Details ==
Sprint offered a Motorola V3m RAZR as a damage replacement, so I want
BitPim to transfer contacts from Outlook to it.
I joined DevMoto and downloaded Handset_USB_Driver_32_v4.0.0.msi from
http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/ . This is newer
than various unofficial 2.6/2.7 End User drivers that places like
HackTheRazr recommend, but the MSI seems to contain much the same
files and seemed to install OK.
I connected the phone to my Windows Vista laptop using a generic mini
USB cable from a PlayStation 3. Unlike my Sanyo phones which prompt
what you want to do when you connect the phone via USB, nothing
happens on the phone except "Charging" appears.
I then installed BitPim 1.07 (BTW I installed it on top of 1.05, but
at startup got "has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an
unusual way" error. The note at http://www.bitpim.org/#download is
confusing!"). BitPim couldn't autodetect the phone, but I specified
V3m (Sprint) and then Browse Com Port found it:

There's also a "Motorola USB Diagnostic Port (COM10)" that BitPim put
an asterisk next to it, but it didn't work (more details below).
Get Data from Phone > [check everything] failed (I haven't tried to
reproduce), but Get Data from Phone > PhoneBook got my few phone
numbers fine, and Get Data from Phone > Calendar also worked. Hooray!
In BitPim I modified the Group of a few phonebook items from General
to Family, then imported a few Outlook Contacts in category "Phone
Calls" (very cool!). But every time I try to Send PhoneBook data back
to the phone (the only option is replace), I get the crash below.
It's repeatable. The phone has the updated contacts with changed
Group and the new Group "Phone Calls", but none of the new contacts.

Note the first time I got the error I'm pretty sure the protocol log
contained successful writes of existing contact data, e.g. the
contacts I changed from Group "General" to "Family" in BitPim.

== Other glitches ==
Besides the crash, here are the other glitches I encountered:
* I had to uninstall BitPim 1.05. The note at
http://www.bitpim.org/#download says "If you are upgrading from or
downgrading to a version earlier than 0.7.16 then you should uninstall
the old version" I think this is missing a '1', since 1.05 is much
newer than version 0.7.16.
* The Help Notes for the V3m (Sprint) could usefully say "BitPim reads
all phonebook entries and calendar entries, including empty ones, from
the phone"
* I'm not sure why getting everything from the phone failed, but I
haven't tried to reproduce.
* BitPim recommends the Motorola USB Diagnostic Port, but it works
worse than the Motorola USB Modem port for me. More details below
(Would you prefer separate e-mails for each glitch?)
