To Tim Cupery: Sorry, I didn't see your email before sending my own response (which took more than ten minutes write). Regardless, in situations like this I prefer to give the other party the benefit of the doubt, and be earnest and helpful. If they are trolling, then I don't give them the satisfaction of an angry response, and more importantly if they are sincerely confused or angry, a helpful response is much more likely to clear up the confusion and leave everyone satisfied than ranting angrily or dismissing their problem as being intentionally hostile without providing help. In addition, to Auden L. Grumet: Following Michael Parkison's suggestion, I tried myself sending a message with an empty subject and a body of "help" and nothing else to the bitpim-users-request address. A few minutes later, I got a reply detailing how to send other requests, including subscribing and unsubscribing, manage the list. Your email, either because of the subject or the additional "- remove", must have been seen as not a valid command, and passed through to the mailing list at large. This behavior makes sense for messages other than commands because the digest is sent from the bitpim-users-request address (I also realized that that was the source of the instruction, and I didn't see it because I am subscribed to individual emails instead of a weekly digest), and many people reply directly to the digest. So, for example, if someone were to reply with a long message to the group that included the word help, he'd want that to be sent to the bitpim-users mailing list instead of having it interpreted as a command to the list server. If you had sent an email with a body or subject only consisting of "help" instead of containing the word help and a longer message, you would have received more detailed instructions on how to subscribe (incidentally, to remove yourself from the list without using the website, you would use the "unsubscribe" command in place of the "help" command). Hopefully that clears up where the confusion arose - you were simply mistaken, and both sets of instructions to unsubscribe are valid. Sincerely, David Johnson ________________________________ From: Tim Cupery <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, May 4, 2010 1:50:46 PM Subject: Re: [BitPim-user] BitPim Digest - Remove Request How about we assume the guy is a troll, and assume he's smart enough to understand these things, and just let the issue drop.
