For those who remember me posting about how to get the pictures using
BitPim and a USB cable using Windows. I said I had just switched to
Linux and would research getting it to work there....so here's the
results:

I couldn't get it to work for anything, and after several weeks of
delving into the technical end of it, I finally got it figured out.
With Linux (I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop), it ended up being the
user permissions for the usb port that was preventing communication.
While I did lots of research on how to fix this, all the 'fixes' and
'workarounds' I found involved changing ownership of the usb ports
and/or devices to the user that wants to use bitpim. In a multi-user
environment, however, this becomes moot, as when you changed ownership,
the next user then cannot use it.

So, much like the windows procedure, these are the steps to make it
work:

Plug in phone with USB cable (you don't need to install a driver for it,
at least not in Ubuntu); or pair the phone using bluetooth (see your
distro's instructions if you don't know how)

While there are several options for this next step, I chose the path
that will not make any changes to your system. Open up a terminal, and
you have two options:

'sudo bitpim' to launch bitpim from user 'root' who has all required
permissions for ports and devices. However, you must be careful with
this, as processes launched by bitpim are also run with root
permissions, and therefore any pictures you download, while you can
download them anywhere on your system, will be owned by root, and
therefore unmodifiable by your username. The way to fix this is either
changing the permissions while still logged in as root ('chmod 777
filename.jpg) or changing the owner of the downloaded pictures while
logged in as root (chown username:group filename.jpg [or *.jpg if
pictures are in a dedicated folder])

Then, once bitpim is launched, you must select the active usb port that
the phone is connected to. In Ubuntu, this assignment changes, so it
must be selected each time. It will be the port listed under available
ports with your phone manufacturer as the vendor name.

Again, you must select the phone type as SCP-3200 (even though it's a
3800), and then click get data, and select ONLY wallpapers. This phone
does not support any other file transfer protocol, so you'll only be
able to get pictures. You cannot download address book, calendar, sms,
etc.

Remember not to close terminal window as bitpim is launched as a child
of that terminal. Once you close bitpim, the terminal window will
return to the prompt and you can then exit the terminal with no
problems.

Hope this helps someone. :o)
