You have to remember, that the Apache project had many many more programming hours put into it then Kannel (I think). also - there is no  reaon why a good modular architecture would be slower then a minimal implementation.

That being said, I do think that the current Kannel HTTP implementation is a bit messier then it should be - and it can certainly be cleaned up, regarding usability, readability and - yes - performance. unfortunatly, I don't currently have the time to play around with it, but I'd love to help.
