I have similar problem sending iMelodies as pure EMS messages. I use
send-sms cgi to send a pure EMS message (no text part), but kannel
adds part of message you mention "<Empty reply DB> from service
provider." The message is truncated to fill up the "free" bytes in
EMS message.
