ok, Kannel assumes that it threads its internal message format in
latin1. This is in some sence a convention. Unfortunatly it may be
desirable, like in your actual case, to preserve the charset (in sense
of the available characters that can be represented by the set).

I'd be +0 in having this "configurable" by config file. Which means
avoiding the automated convertion to latin1 internally.

In any case you can send us a 'diff -u'ed patch and people will have a
review on it and vote if it makes considerable sense.
