serious? only one, iconv code path seems somewhat fscked up, thus it
breaks on configurations where http server does correct transcoding.

There are 2 solutions here. Mine is simple fix^Whack to always convert
any encoding to UTF-8 before passing it to xml and further. And
another, which was posted to the list here, more complex but I didn't
gave it a spin (but I believe the poster did).
