Yes good plan! 

Since then I've applied autoconf patches ... but ...
redhat 9.1 autoconf (2.57) and automake (1.6.3) did not co-operate
I have tried autoconf 2.59 and automake 1.8.5 also but I think 
 they are possibly not well tested on redhat 9 and I'm
 having difficulty :-7
