I addition to the build-essentials package you'll need the following for 
  libxml2.

For the XML libraries do;

sudo apt-get install libxml2
sudo apt-get install libxml2-dev

Btw, there is precompiled package for Kannel as well, but I don't know 
which version it is. If you want to try it you can do;

sudo apt-get install kannel
