yep, backward compatibility is always an issue. But remember that we switched
internal character encoding from 'latin1' to 'utf8' which makes also some
"changes" ;)

Anyway, this "change" will be reflected in the NEWS file section, so anyone
should recognize it when upgrading.

yep, agreed! Let's remove all references in the docs, but keep it "working" for
an other stable release cycle.
