Well, yes, definitely "spool" performs much better than "file". However, if you face high traffic and big queues, you need to be extra careful with the fs of choice. In my experience, ext2 was the best option but YMMV. Never tried reiserfs, I've been told it's pretty good at moving big files. XFS seems to excel on that department as well, but that's not the case here. Because of the way the store is used (lots of small files on 100 directories being written/read/deleted lots of times) I'd rule out any journaled filesystem.
