Charset or body misformed, rejected

Hello users,
I am trying to send special characters in messages like @ _ etc and these
are replaced with ?.
I googled things and saw that I need to add

alt-charset = utf-8
under group = smsc (which I did, but not fixed. )

i tried adding
coding=2
charset=utf-8

and as soon as I add charset=utf-8 and send a message kannel throws an
error
"Charset or body misformed, rejected"

can someone advise what should be done to send special characters in a
message,
