Hi,
  Camino requires the Bookmark Bar visible to allow me to use the  
Command-<Number> shortcut to go to sites in that section of my  
bookmarks.

Safari doesn't; it allows using the shortcut whether the Bookmark Bar  
is visible or hidden.
