Just for the record, the simplest solution - in retrospect, bleeding
obvious - came from my friendly local Debian jock, who pointed out that
running it from the command line with width and height arguments, ie
/boot/apps/mozilla/mozilla-bin -width 500 -height 600
opens it to the specified size.
No doubt works with any app that runs in a resizable window.
