Dominique,

I too had the same problems.  Once I removed one line in my pref.js file 
that referred to a local start page, the problems disappeared. Look for 
a line like

user_pref("mailnews.start_page.url", 
"file:///C:/path/to/local/start/page.htm");

and remove or comment it out.  That solved all my problems.
